Browse more safely online

Websites infringe upon our online privacy so subtly that we don’t even know what they gather about us. Here are some tips to protect yourself more from possible invasions of privacy besides using VPN.

StartPage search engine

If you’re concerned about Google tracking your search queries and building a profile for all your online activities take a look at StartPage.com. It’s a Dutch search engine that is strongly committed to protecting the privacy of its users and is dedicated to ensure that its users search information cannot be linked back.

Read their privacy policy here.

HTTPS Everywhere

HTTPS Everywhere is a Firefox, Chrome, and Opera extension that encrypts your communications with many major websites, making your browsing more secure. Encrypt the web: Install HTTPS Everywhere today.

HTTPS Everywhere is produced as a collaboration between The Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site. The HTTPS Everywhere extension fixes these problems by using clever technology to rewrite requests to these sites to HTTPS.

Privacy Badger

Privacy Badger is a browser add-on that stops advertisers and other third-party trackers from secretly tracking where you go and what pages you look at on the web.  If an advertiser seems to be tracking you across multiple websites without your permission, Privacy Badger automatically blocks that advertiser from loading any more content in your browser.  To the advertiser, it's like you suddenly disappeared.

When you view a webpage, that page will often be made up of content from many different sources.  (For example, a news webpage might load the actual article from the news company, ads from an ad company, and the comments section from a different company that's been contracted out to provide that service.)  Privacy Badger keeps track of all of this.  If as you browse the web, the same source seems to be tracking your browser across different websites, then Privacy Badger springs into action, telling your browser not to load any more content from that source.  And when your browser stops loading content from a source, that source can no longer track you.  Voila!

Read their privacy policy here.

Tor browser

The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked.
Tor Browser lets you use Tor on Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, or GNU/Linux without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured web browser to protect your anonymity, and is self-contained (portable).

duckduckgo search engine

This is an anonymous search engine which neither tracks you nor stores your data. You are perfectly safe when you are searching using DuckDuckGo.

Another point in favor of DuckDuckGo and against Google is this: Google shows you the search results which they ‘think’ you might be interested in, based on the data which they have collected previously from your computer. DuckDuckGo does nothing like this. It presents you with pure data, unadulterated with material someone at Google thinks might be of interest to you based on your previous searches. By doing this, Google is in fact restricting your choices and nudging you in a particular direction.

Safe Browser Settings

Internet Explorer

Access the Tools icon in the top right corner and then press “Internet Options”.

Go to the Security tab.

Here you can see 4 internet zones, the “Internet” security zone contains all the websites that are not in the “Trusted/Restricted sites” zone, meaning 99,999999% of the internet. For this zone, it’s best if you change the security level from Medium to High.

A side effect of selecting “High” is that features such as flash pages or ActiveX scripts might be disabled on certain pages.

In the “Trusted sites” zone you can include websites that you know for sure are risk-free so you can select a lower security setting that enables all the features of a site.

In the “Restricted sites” zone, you can write down websites you know are dangerous so Internet Explorer can apply the maximum security settings while on the page.

Right next to the “Security” tab you will find the “Privacy” settings.

In here you will find settings related to Cookies. As we’ve said above, these remember personal information such as account names, emails and passwords and more. Click the “Advanced” button.

In this area, you can find two columns, first party cookies and third party cookies.

Session cookies are used on the same site to track the information from one page to another. On internet commerce websites for instance, session cookies are used to track your order from one page to the next until the moment you check out.

You can block both first party and third party cookies, while disabling session cookies, unless you frequently use sites that need them to function properly.

Now press the “Sites” button and go to this menu. Here you can write down what websites you allow to store or block cookies.

The last setting you should change in Internet Explorer can be found on the “Advanced” tab. Scroll down on the list until you find “Enable third party browser extensions*” and uncheck it. Doing this will disable any browser extensions you may have, which is a good idea from a security perspective since many of them have been known to secretly track a user’s behavior  while also opening up potential security vulnerabilities.
